Positive Displacement Meters

Positive displacement water meters consist of common types like; gear type, oscillating piston meters and nutating disk meters. Either method relies on the water to physically displace the moving measuring element in direct proportion to the amount of water that passes through the meter. The gear, piston or disc moves a magnet that drives the water meter register. The flow of water displaces the measuring part of the water meter according to volume expressed in either cubic feet or gallons.

Positive displacement meters are generally very accurate at the low-to-moderate flow rates typical of residential and small commercial users and commonly range in size of 5/8", ¾", 1", 1-½", and 2" (25 GPM to 170 GPM). Because displacement meters require that all water flows through the meter to "push" the measuring element, they generally are not practical in large commercial applications requiring high flow rates or low-pressure loss. Positive displacement meters normally have a built-in strainer to protect the measuring element from rocks or other debris that could stop or break the measuring element. Positive displacement meters normally have bronze, brass or plastic bodies with internal measuring chambers made of molded plastics and stainless steel.

Nutating Water Meter
Nutating disc meters are the most common and accurate type of positive displacement meters. The simple and reliable operating principle allows water to flow into the chamber, which causes the disc to nutate. Each disc nutation represents a fixed quantity of water, so the total flow is calculated by the total number of nutations.

Oval Gear Water Meter
Positive displacement meters, including Oval Gear meters, measure volumetric flow rate of a liquid passing through the meter by repeatedly entrapping it with rotating parts to measure the volume. Oval gear meters consist of two toothed precision wheels that are oval shaped. As fluid passes through the meter, the oval wheels rotate proportionately—the number of rotations is equal to the volume measurement.

Oscillating Piston Water Meter
Positive Displacement Water Meters utilize a magnetically driven, positive displacement, oscillating piston design. It is designed to measure clean potable water where flow is in one direction only in residential, commercial and industrial settings.
