The ASCE Convention will take place on October 8th, 2017 in the New Orleans Marriott. The ASCE Convention is the Society flagship membership event and it is the single annual opportunity that the entire Society is represented together and therefore needs to reflect the diversity that ASCE encompasses. The program for the Convention will be of an integrated, cross-cultural, technical, and educational nature.
The program will follow the convention topics listed and described below. These topics are intended to be used to define a recurring convention program that draws attendees back each year. They are intended to provide benefits to attendees and their employers on an educational and professional level.
- State of the industry and profession
The presentations on this topic will be given by recognized thought leaders, corporate leaders in engineering, corporate leaders from related fields, Institute leaders, and leaders in engineering education, leaders from cooperating industry organizations, and political leaders.
- Professional development
To help take your career to the next level, topics will provide programming based on the needs of members, engineering firms,and leadership issues to educate and enhance the individual skills and practice of attendees. Potential topics include leadership, project management, value engineering, construction management, risk analysis and management, asset management, marketing, business development, public relations, political advocacy, and ethics.
- Multi-disciplinary technical
This topic is intended to bring together the best of the best from the Institutes’ conferences, ASCE conferences and conferences from other professions, multi-discipline issues, innovation, best practices, hot issues, case studies, perspectives from allied professions affecting civil engineers, and new concepts.
- Natural & man-made disasters
Come and explore disasters and catastrophes from a multi-disciplinary point of view. Sessions within this topic will look at the natural and/or man-made causes, prediction, present codes and standards and suggested revisions, effects, and how to mitigate effects by component or macro approaches.
- Strategic issues / public policy
This topic features forums to discuss the progress and direction of public policies and their effect on the profession. Sessions are intended to present current status, drill down on practicable application of policies, and explore many others areas of critical interest to the profession.
- Significant projects
Here ASCE will cover megaprojects and offer multidisciplinary views on the feasibility, planning, design, construction, costs, public process, value, innovation, environmental sustainability, and resiliency of the project discussed.
- History & heritage
Do you know the civil engineering past? Sessions are designed to cover significant civil engineering achievements within the region of the host city or of national importance having appeal for all attendees.

You’ll hear first-hand accounts from experts on natural disaster response and recovery, and learn how New Orleans used rebuilding as an opportunity to strengthen community life and social justice. Also, we will offer optional tours for both convention attendees and guests to explore “The Big Easy.” You’ll have abundant opportunities to meet and engage with a cross section of leaders from the public-sector community, the consulting engineering sector, academia, and colleagues from around the world – not only through learning sessions but also through networking.
